Gaza: A Personal Comment

Sixty years ago when Israel became a state, Zionist leaders proclaimed with great zeal, “Israel will be a light unto the world.” I’ve been following the events in Gaza, and sit here is shocked horror at the depth of psychopathic, murderous rampage against a totally defenseless population who have been starved, denied electricity, food, water and basic human services for years, yet still defiantly refuse to have their human spirit crushed. How can this be? This defies comprehension, unless there is something deep within the collective psyche of the Israeli soldiers, and people, that can somehow offer justification for any action, no matter how horrendous, against their perceived enemies. The novelist Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of “Sherlock Holmes”, once wrote, “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” What remains after struggling to find rationality in all this is the inescapable conclusion that there is in fact a belief that is at work here, though the depths of its obscenity and depravity are nearly incomprehensible. Yet, it alone remains when all else is disproved.

That belief system, incredibly, is best characterized by the words of Menachem Begin, Prime Minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983, who publicly stated the following, "Our race (speaking of the Jews) is the Master Race. We are divine gods on this planet. We are as different from the inferior races as they are from insects. In fact, compared to our race, other races are beasts and animals, cattle at best. Other races are considered as human excrement. Our destiny is to rule over the inferior races. Our earthly kingdom will be ruled by our leader with a rod of iron. The masses will lick our feet and serve us as our slaves."

They truly believe this! There can be no other explanation. How else can the carnage happening in Gaza be justified? Yes, Palestinians have fired rockets into Israel, defiantly protesting their treatment in the only way they could. But to unleash a totally modern military juggernaut of advanced fighter bombers, tanks, artillery, and ultimately a ground invasion, against an unarmed population of 1.5 million people is madness on a scale unseen since World war II. In their collective psychosis of “Chosen-ness” the Israelis have unconsciously become the modern incarnation of the Nazis, as their actions clearly demonstrate. Why negotiate a just and lasting peace with those you consider “beasts and cattle?”

And, as always, the usual hysterical rants of “anti-Semitism” and the like will rain down upon anyone, including me, who dares to criticize Israeli actions in any way. I am in no way an anti-Semite; that said, I will not sit quietly while this butchery goes on. The moral imperatives of right and wrong apply to all, no one is exempt- Israelis, Palestinians, or you and I. To remain silent is to concur, which I will not and cannot do.

Until a re-consideration of this belief occurs, and the Palestinians are met as equals in negotiating a true, equitable settlement that brings peace and security to both parties, there will never be peace. Until then, the only evidence for Israel being a “light unto the world” is the glow of white phosphorous bombs being dropped in Gaza.
