Abraham Lincoln
"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing Government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it."
- Abraham Lincoln, 1861
Apparently forgetting this statement, Lincoln, as Commander in Chief of the Union forces, fought a 4 year war Civil War, costing 600,000 American lives, to deny those exact constitutionally mandated rights to the secessionist southern states of the Confederacy.
